Artist Statement:

von Puttkammer’s  work explores the isolation, claustrophobia, and absurdity of, “otherness,” -as defined by Western and Asian culture - through oil painting, photoshop, and performance. von Puttkammer culls from experience as a mixed-race queer neurodivergent woman raised in middle-class suburbia to visually recreate the seething silent discomfort and the subliminal fatal positionality of those childhood memories.

SALT & OIL (latest grouping of work) depicts pale creatures from a dark, nebulous world reminiscent of a drug den. Scenes are fashioned from a fusion of porn, historical photography, film noir, and personal saucy experiences. The depicted provocateurs seduce the viewer into profane scenarios, confusing the observer with a dichotomy of shock and intrigue. Referencing the works of Caravaggio, Robin F. Williams, Antoine D’Agata, Mr. Bean and more – the sexuality, violence, and absurdity of the work ironically challenges yet champions the viewer as voyeur.
